Instagram Marks Another Milestone as Privacy, Mental Health Concerns Grow

(MENAFN) Instagram is marking its anniversary as one of the most influential platforms in the global digital economy, with more than 3 billion monthly active users. However, its continued expansion is accompanied by growing concerns over user privacy, data protection and the impact of social media use on young people’s mental health.

Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger launched Instagram on Oct. 6, 2010, initially presenting it as a photo-sharing application. The platform rapidly gained popularity before being acquired by Meta for about $1 billion two years later.

Instagram continued expanding its services over the following years, adding video sharing and direct messaging in 2013 before introducing its short-form video feature, Reels, in 2020.

India currently represents Instagram’s largest national user base, with about 480 million active users, followed by the US, Brazil, Indonesia, Japan, Türkiye, Mexico, the UK, Germany and Argentina, according to October 2025 figures cited in reports.

Young adults account for a significant portion of the platform’s global audience. Users between the ages of 25 and 34 represent approximately 34% of the total user base, while those aged 18 to 24 account for another 27.6%.

The platform has also played a major role in transforming online influence into a commercial industry. Users with substantial followings can use their audiences to promote products, services and brands, helping establish what is now widely known as the influencer economy.

Instagram further strengthened its role in digital commerce by introducing shopping functions in 2020, allowing major companies as well as smaller businesses and independent sellers to showcase products directly through the platform.

Despite its enormous commercial reach and expanding social influence, Instagram is increasingly encountering regulatory scrutiny and legal challenges in different parts of the world. Concerns surrounding privacy, data practices and the effects of social media on younger users continue to create challenges for the platform as it enters another stage of its growth.
