Provided by AGPAccording to reports, Merz said during an interview with public broadcaster ARD that the United States currently does not have sufficient missile capacity for its own requirements, making deployment abroad unfeasible at this stage. He stressed that the absence of the system in Germany should not be interpreted as a shift in bilateral relations.
As stated by reports, the proposed deployment of Tomahawk missiles had originally been linked to plans under former US President Joe Biden in 2024, with the intention of strengthening Germany’s long-term deterrence capabilities until Europe develops comparable systems.
Merz also addressed NATO’s nuclear-sharing framework, reaffirming continued US commitment to collective defense arrangements.
“There are absolutely no compromises. There is no restriction on the US commitment to nuclear deterrence in the NATO area. There is no doubt about that whatsoever.”
He also described recent discussions regarding the withdrawal of more than 5,000 US troops from Germany as part of an ongoing process rather than a new development, noting that such troop adjustments had already been under consideration.
According to general accounts, the German chancellor rejected suggestions that these defense-related developments were tied to his public criticism of US policy, including remarks concerning the conflict involving Iran.
Merz reiterated his concerns about US strategy toward Iran but insisted that diplomatic engagement with Washington remains a priority. He also addressed tensions with Donald Trump, while stating that he continues to support cooperation between Germany and the United States despite disagreements.
