Germany Detains Kazakh Citizen for Spying on Behalf of Russia

(MENAFN) German authorities have arrested a Kazakh national on espionage charges, accusing him of channeling sensitive intelligence on Germany's military support for Ukraine and its defense industry directly to Russian handlers, federal prosecutors announced Wednesday.

The Federal Prosecutor's Office identified the suspect as Sergej K. and confirmed he was taken into custody on April 28, following a months-long investigation into his alleged contacts with a Russian intelligence service.

According to the arrest warrant, Sergej K. systematically transmitted classified and sensitive information to a Russian handler — including details on Germany's arms deliveries to Ukraine and intelligence on the country's defense sector, with particular focus on firms developing drone and robotic technologies.

Prosecutors further alleged that the suspect repeatedly forwarded photographs of public buildings in Berlin, along with images of military convoys on German highways — among them a convoy belonging to the armed forces of a NATO member state.

The scope of his alleged activities extended beyond passive intelligence gathering. Authorities said Sergej K. also provided information identifying potential sabotage targets inside Germany, and actively offered to recruit additional operatives for both espionage and sabotage operations on behalf of Russian intelligence.

The arrest is the latest in a sweeping escalation of counterintelligence operations by German authorities, who have significantly intensified their crackdown on suspected Russian informants and recruits in recent months. Officials have cited deepening concerns over Moscow's efforts to conduct espionage and potential sabotage on German soil — activities increasingly viewed as an extension of Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine.
