Syrian president Al-Sharaa delays scheduled visit to Germany

(MENAFN) Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa has postponed his scheduled trip to Germany, which was initially planned for January 19–20, according to a German government spokesperson.

"The Syrian side postponed the visit due to domestic political developments," the spokesperson stated, providing no additional information.

During the planned Berlin visit, Sharaa was expected to meet with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. He was also set to take part in a roundtable discussion with German business executives.

Last week, the Syrian government launched a military operation that reclaimed territories in eastern and northeastern Syria following repeated breaches of previous agreements by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

On Sunday, Sharaa announced a comprehensive ceasefire and integration deal with the SDF, which includes the withdrawal of all SDF military units to the east of the Euphrates River, as stated by reports.
