Syria's Leader Holds Off Germany Trip

(MENAFN) Syria's President Ahmad al-Sharaa has delayed his upcoming diplomatic mission to Germany, a German government representative confirmed to media on Monday, as domestic military operations take precedence over international engagement.

The cancellation affects meetings originally set for Jan. 19-20 in Berlin, where al-Sharaa was slated to hold discussions with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

"The Syrian side postponed the visit due to domestic political developments," the spokesman said, declining to elaborate on specific circumstances behind the decision.

A planned roundtable with German corporate executives has also been scrapped as Damascus prioritizes internal security matters.

The postponement follows Syrian government forces launching military action last week to reclaim territory in the nation's eastern and northeastern regions. The offensive came after what officials described as continued breaches by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) of earlier agreements.

On Sunday, al-Sharaa revealed a sweeping ceasefire arrangement with the SDF, announcing that all SDF combat units would relocate east of the Euphrates River under the integration deal.

The diplomatic cancellation underscores the volatile security situation confronting Syria's leadership as it navigates both armed group integration and reconstruction efforts.
