Syrian President Delays Berlin Visit

(MENAFN) Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa has postponed his planned trip to Germany, which was initially set for January 19–20, according to a German government spokesperson speaking to a news agency on Monday.

"The Syrian side postponed the visit due to domestic political developments," the spokesperson stated, without offering additional clarification.

During the visit to Berlin, Sharaa had been scheduled to meet German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. He was also expected to join a roundtable discussion with German business representatives.

Meanwhile, the Syrian government initiated a military campaign last week, reclaiming territories in eastern and northeastern Syria after repeated breaches of earlier agreements by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

On Sunday, Sharaa declared a broad ceasefire and integration accord with the SDF, stipulating that all SDF military units would withdraw to the east of the Euphrates River.
